Position Overview

The Interim Campus Minister/Chaplain for Muslim Student Support and Community Building will lead Campus Ministry programs for and with Muslim students; work with the Campus Ministry staff in interfaith outreach and concerns; enhance Marquette University’s student focused ministry and contribute to a culture of encounter of diverse peoples.

Campus Ministry works in tandem with the Division of Student Affairs in living out the mission of Marquette as a Jesuit, Catholic university dedicated to pursuing truth, discovering and sharing knowledge, fostering personal and professional excellence, promoting a life of faith, and developing leadership expressed in service to others.

In this limited appointment, emphasis will be put on direct student contact, rather than administrative or committee work. However, there will be limited administrative responsibilities to ensure good communication and accountability.

Duties and Responsibilities

1. S/he will be available as a program consultant, advocate, educator, and spiritual companion to members of the Muslim student community, including student organizations geared towards the Islamic faith tradition.
2. As needed, this person will develop programs to serve student interest and need.
3. S/he will attend Friday prayer, Jumu’ah, whenever possible, and with Muslim students will oversee the care and appointment of the Muslim Prayer Space, AMU 231.
4. S/he will serve as Campus Ministry liaison with Muslim faculty on campus who serve as advisors to the MSA.
5. Work with campus ministry team members to develop and market Campus Ministry programs to student population.
6. Develop innovative ways to reach young adults in a university setting.
7. Participate in team meetings, program planning, retreats, and department/university committee work.
8. Report to the Director and meet with her regularly.
9. Be available as needed for crisis situations. Some evening and weekend work is required.
10. Perform other duties and responsibilities as required, assigned, or requested.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Bachelor’s degree.
• 2 years
• Active practice in Islamic faith tradition, broad and appreciative knowledge of the breadth of Islam. Ability to address everyday concerns of students on campus and the intersection of spirituality and young adulthood.
• Excellent communication skills, an energetic and outgoing personality, strong administrative/organizational skills and the ability to work on a ministry team are essential.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Master’s degree study in theology/religious studies, divinity, pastoral ministry or related field
• An understanding of Ignatian Spirituality
• Experience in a university ministry or student services setting
• Familiarity with Microsoft Office, Publisher.
