Position Overview

This position will coordinate the activities of the Flexible Assembly Systems Network (FASN) Advanced Manufacturing Center. This position will refine the scope of activities to be undertaken by FASN and will articulate the FASN value to members and potential members. It is expected that the managing director will grow the center membership and grow the research funding for the College of Engineering. Center activities are expected to yield outcomes that have value to participating members and the host organization (College of Engineering). The center outcomes will contribute to the state of the art in automated assembly systems.

Duties and Responsibilities

1. Formalize the Structure of the Flexible Assembly Systems Network (FASN). Aspects include:
• Refine FASN vision and strategic goals
• Establish FASN bylaws
• Establish FASN membership agreements
• Establish FASN contract agreements
• Establish FASN intellectual property agreements
2. Grow FASN Membership. Aspects include:
• Establish plan to articulate value of FASN to potential members
• Generate Marketing/Advertising Materials for FASN
• Generate pool of potential FASN members
• Visit potential FASN industrial partners to establish a working relationship
• Establish link between member needs and FASN capabilities
3. Build and maintain the physical presence of FASN. Aspects include:
• Hire essential personnel
• Build and maintain equipment/facilities needed for FASN
4. Coordinate the daily activities of FASN. Aspects include:
• Manage student personnel
• Set priority of FASN daily activities
5. Perform other duties and responsibilities as required, assigned, or requested.
6. Establish opportunities for undergraduate research and senior design within FASN

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

A bachelor’s degree in engineering and a master’s degree in Engineering, Business, or a related area is required. Five years of experience as a manager of technical innovation is required. Knowledge of current advanced manufacturing processes, particularly in the area of joining and assembly. Excellent written and oral communication skills. Demonstrated ability and initiative to undertake projects and carry them through to completion. Ability to work as part of a team and with diverse groups. Ability to prioritize and organize multiple tasks. Comfortable making public presentations to small and large groups. Appreciates industrial and academic interests and perspectives. Some evening and weekend hours will be required.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Has knowledge of current industrial practices in automation. Is adept at selling ideas and services. Has a high degree of passion for improving engineering education. Has experience with new venture start-up/bootstrapping.
